Judith, her husband Darren, and their young daughter Brooke live the suburban life with its fair share of ups, downs, thrills, and spills. Judith works at a medical supply office where she is in charge of a group of employees. But there is something amiss in Judith’s picture-perfect world. The cold treatment from her husband, the contempt in her stepdaughter’s demeanor and the snickering behind her back at the office is the story of Judith’s unhappy existence. One day, when events take an ugly turn at work, Judith rushes home for some alone time, only to find her husband in a compromising position with another woman in their house. She also comes to know that her daughter is aware of such meetings that happened in the past. How does a hot-blooded woman deal with a situation like this? But, Is Judith a hot-blooded?
‘Judith’ is a short length script by writer Casey Mensing. Casey writes an unassuming sci-fi thriller that masquerades as a family drama with a middle-aged suburban housewife navigating her life challenges. Casey’s writing of this short sneaks in a lot of important clues about the characters throughout the run length of the story. But they do not set off the alarm bells that mellowing down the ‘Oh My God’ moment at the end. These well drawn out characters make the story much more than what meets the eye.
Casey Mensing reopens the dialogue of too much technology being a dangerous thing with ‘Judith’. Imagining the future in an advanced world where robots or cyborgs are given authority to decide for humans, how they address the very human trait of emotions remains an unanswered question. Judith is one version of a world where artificial beings are empowered enough to decide how humans live thier life henceforth.
