The Janitor

Meet Joe, a self-made man, who has accomplished in his profession what he wanted to, since his childhood. His career choice was neither common nor popular among young men. But Joe always knew what he was good at and wanted to make a career out of it. In an engaging and entertaining monologue, Joe describes his journey so far, both in his career and his life. He came to America aspiring to be a janitor and starts work in an elementary school. Rising slowly up the ranks, Joe goes on to work in a big office building in New York. He meets the girl of his dreams and starts a family with her. They were both working on different floors of the same building when the planes come crashing.

‘The Janitor’ is a narrative short by Director Adam Klugman. Through ‘The Janitor’ Adam resonates the voice of the migrants who are resigned to illegal migrants because of the problems with their citizenship. Actor Joe Bertot carries the entire weight of the film on his shoulders with his splendid performance. Joe steals a smile when he talks about his experiences in America, tugs at the heartstrings when he talks about what happened on the day of 9/11 and floods the eye when he ends his monologue stating the reason he continues to stay on in America despite all his troubles. He says that the mess created there that day was something no one will be able to clean up, ever.

‘The Janitor’ sets a cheerful and positive atmosphere before bringing forth the issues of the migrants and the prevalent racism in America today. Through the cheerful and optimistic janitor, Joe, we meet a human face that we can assign to each one of the faceless migrants fighting for legal status in America.
